AP Rural Livelihood Study
In recent years the drought prone regions of Andhra Pradesh (AP), have witnessed increasing distress migration, increased indebtedness, and farmer suicides. It has been observed that some families moved above the poverty barriers, those on the verge of poverty fell in to debt traps and lost their livelihood. This publication is an outcome of the research study jointly conducted by APMAS and ISLP provides a perspective on the status of livelihoods in semi arid areas of Andhra Pradesh, livelihood promotional practices in vogue and the impact of livelihood interventions. The study included a survey of 160 households, focus group discussions with 102 community based organizations in four districts, and case studies of four livelihood interventions.
In Andhra Pradesh a variety of programmes impacting livelihoods of poor are implemented through the community based organization, especially through the collectives of women. An exclusive chapter on the community based organizations provides the understanding on the strengths and areas of improvement indicating the role of promoters and support organizations while they attempt livelihood promotion through CBOs. The case studies and the synthesis of learnings from the livelihood interventions specifies the reasons for successes and failures in the areas of dry land agriculture, dairy, retail marketing and watershed based livelihood interventions.

Livelihood Interventions are conscious efforts by an agency or an institution to promote or support the livelihoods of a large number of people, including for the disadvantaged sections of the society, other than themselves. Livelihoods are much more than just employment. Livelihood promotion goes far beyond running an income-generating programme. A variety of interventions can influence the livelihoods of people in a significant way. This resource book helps open up these choices for a professional involved in livelihood intervention. There are four modules of this resource book.

APLLG
A livelihood-learning group was established in consultation with key players
involved in livelihood promotion with the objective of sharing knowledge and facilitating policy dialogue on rural
livelihood enhancement. The lessons learnt in this process would help in the emergence of ‘sustainable institutions
for sustainable livelihoods’ as well as helps in establishing a resource center for livelihood promotion. The
objectives of the APLLG include facilitating cross learning among the livelihood promoting institution and
organizations, documenting and disseminating key leanings in livelihoods and formulating strategies and influencing
policies related to livelihoods of the poor.
